Kristina Matousch: Painting Fucking Guilty Pleasure

“Paint is paint”, she said, “but as the material transcends to figuration I shiver from lust and repulsion”. She continued: “The act of painting is intimate, loving and erotic, but also disgusting. The painting is a pleaser, a commodity, vulgar and without resistance. The marks of the hands exposes the body and the figurative image gives an illusion of another reality where the paint is no longer paint, but an image of another world.”

Machine-made holes in hard materials have no marks of the hands that willed them, but they have emotion and tell, perhaps, a two-headed story of desire and restraint.

The story about locking yourself up for three months in a summerhouse to paint can be hard to tell.

A late night a couple of months ago, a long conversation about painting and its premises led us to invite Kristina Matousch to Antechamber to deal with the mixed feelings of lust and sickness somehow connected to the realm of painting.
